Many licorice species are grown in Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
It is a plant that is easy to grow and winter-hardy.
Harvesting the roots takes time. Only after 3 to 4 years is this possible. Before the roots can be harvested, it takes at least 3 to 4 years.
Liquorice is used in many foods and pharmaceuticals because of its taste, sweetener and other ingredients.
In untreated licorice, there is glycyrrhizin. This substance provides the characteristic sweet taste, but also a substance you should be careful with because it increases blood pressure.
It is therefore important that this substance is not present in a licorice root dietary supplement.
What is deglycyrrhized (DGL) licorice root?
Natural licorice contains the substance glycyrrhizin. If pure, untreated licorice root is consumed in large quantities, glycyrrhizin can cause very high blood pressure, for example.
Through a special extraction process it is possible to extract the substance glycyrrhizin from the licorice root after which a safe supplement can be produced that has been used for centuries as a traditional medicine within Ayurvedic medicine and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).
