What is vitamin E?
Vitamin E is a natural fat-soluble vitamin of plant origin. It consists of a group of compounds divided into tocopherols and tocotrienols. Vitamin E is found mainly in foods containing fat. The two most common types are alpha-tocopherol and beta-tocopherol. Alpha-tocopherol is considered the most active form. Vitamin preparations usually contain either dl-alpha-tocopherol or d-alpha-tocopherol. The latter is the nature-identical form of the vitamin.

Absorption of vitamin E
Vitamin E is absorbed in the small intestine along with fats. The absorption is not complete. When large amounts are ingested, absorption decreases. People with a reduced ability to absorb lipids also absorb less vitamin E from the small intestine.

Protects against oxidative stress.
Vitamin E is distributed through the body in the same way as fat (bound to lipoproteins) and reaches most tissues. Its physiological effect is associated with its role as an antioxidant that prevents the oxidation of unsaturated fatty acids. Vitamin E also protects vitamin A from deterioration. The requirement for vitamin E depends on the intake of polyunsaturated fatty acids.

Excretion of vitamin E.
Vitamin E is most likely excreted through the bile and then with the feces. It may be found in breast milk but is barely absorbed by the placenta.

Natural sources of vitamin E
Vitamin E is found mainly in plant foods, but liver also contains fairly high amounts of vitamin E. other natural sources include:
•  Fats
•  Cheese
•  Cereal products
•  Oily fish
•  Eggs
•  Dairy products
