The Ginkgo biloba or Japanese walnut tree, native to central China, is the oldest living tree species on earth (about 300 million years). The extract from the leaves of Ginkgo biloba has beneficial effects on our health in various ways. In traditional Chinese medicine, ginkgo leaf has been used to support health for more than 5,000 years. In Western countries, it is mainly used to support blood circulation and cognitive functions (such as memory, concentration and learning ability).*

Only highly concentrated, standardized Ginkgo biloba extracts are effective. Ginkgo biloba-PS from Vitals contains per capsule 480 mg of the branded ingredient Virtiva®, which consists of 120 mg Ginkgo biloba extract (including 24 mg flavone glycosides and 6 mg terpene lactones) and 360 mg lecithin (including 55 mg phosphatidylserine). This ratio of flavone glycosides and terpene lactones (24/6) is the most commonly used in scientific research with Ginkgo biloba.

Improved absorption through Phytosome® technology
The absorption and bioavailability of the flavone glycosides and terpene lactones in Ginkgo biloba-PS has been greatly improved by application of the patented Phytosome® technology from the Italian manufacturer Indena. The term Phytosome (or phytosome) comes from the Greek word phuton (plant) and soma (body). During the patented manufacturing process, the natural clumping together of specific, poorly absorbable phytonutrients (such as those from Ginkgo biloba) is reduced, and they are mixed with phospholipids (phosphatidylserine) from sunflower lecithin. The active ingredients are not encapsulated (as in liposomes), but a homogeneous mixture of small, easily absorbable particles is created. The active ingredients in Ginkgo biloba are both lipophilic (terpene lactones) and hydrophilic (flavone glycosides). And phospholipids are lipophilic on one side and hydrophilic on the other. Because of this, the phytonutrients tend to adhere to the phospholipids and form so-called phytosomes. In this way, they are absorbed extra well. After all, cell membranes (such as those of cells in the small intestine and brain) are themselves composed of a phospholipid double layer, which allows good absorption of the active ingredients (see Figure 1).

Different from liposome technology
In a liposome, the active ingredient is in the center of a sphere with a double layer of phospholipids. With Phytosome® technology, it is really a homogeneous mixture and the active ingredient is not encapsulated. As a result, you need far fewer phospholipids than with liposomes.
